Hotel Exhibitions

Guests and all hotel visitors are treated to a stimulating and diverse range of exhibitions at Sofitel Melbourne. While some hotels have a permanent art collection on view in their public areas, Sofitel Melbourne is unique in presenting a series of temporary exhibitions of design, craft, photography, painting and drawing that change on a regular basis throughout the year. Many of the works are for sale and anyone interested in purchasing an artwork should contact the Concierge. If you would like to know more about a particular artist, you can request that the hotel's art advisor, Global Art Projects, contact you directly.

Established in 1997, Global Art Projects is an independent company specialising in the development and management of national and international visual arts and cultural events, projects and exhibitions, and arts consultancy work.

25 August - 1 November 2010, Atrium Gallery, Level 35, Sofitel Melbourne On Collins

This collection represents the first major photographic exhibition in Australia featuring images of Timor-Leste by an East Timorese photographer.

The portraits reveal the tenacity and vision of the people who are developing a new nation. By choice or circumstance these individuals have taken on roles to contribute to their families, communities and country. This collection acknowledges the talent and dedication that is creating Timor’s future.

The collection of landscapes echoes the vitality and tenacity of the East Timorese. The land has maintained its beauty despite an overwhelming history.

East Timorese born photographer Jorge de Araujo is active around social and cultural issues, using art to inspire social change. Formally qualified in Community Cultural Development, his style combines and compliments corporate assignments, lifestyle images and effective storytelling.

Attune to the Earth: an installation by Kaori Kato                                                                                                                                                                           4 August - 29 October 2010 Lobby Gallery, Level 1, Sofitel Melbourne On Collins

I have been developing my art practice mainly through by paper folding. Folding paper for me is a vehicle to investigate my research. My current art practice explores the movement and structure found in natural phenomena, such as a geyser, volcanic activity, a waterfall, an aurora, to name only a few. This exhibition Attune to the earth will investigate the relationship between the form and pattern of the volcanic action and what we experience from the red paper sculptural work. The colour of the human blood is red. I see the volcanic magma lava as the blood of the earth.
